Abstract:
Digitization of engineering investigation refers to the comprehensive integration of modern digital technologies—such as computer science, information technology, sensor systems, and artificial intelligence(AI)—into the entire engineering investigation process. Its core objective is to enhance investigation efficiency, data accuracy, and scientific decision-making through technological innovation. To outline the development of digital engineering investigation in China, this paper employs literature review, data collection, enterprise surveys, and practical experience from team-based engineering projects. It is observed that the digitization of engineering investigation in China has evolved alongside advances in computer and digital technologies, progressing through four main phases: the initial stage(1960 s-2000), the growth stage(2000-2010), the development stage(2010-2020), and the integration stage(post-2020). Currently, digital technologies significantly drive progress in investigation drilling, in-situ testing, and geotechnical laboratory testing. Numerous stable and mature digital platforms supporting the full investigation workflow have emerged nationwide, serving data collection, analysis and visualization, quality supervision, and data management. Some enterprises have even developed new digital engineering services based on these capabilities. Looking ahead, the digitization of engineering investigation will increasingly reflect interdisciplinary integration, technology convergence, data interoperability, and the deep application of artificial intelligence. An integrated"space-air-ground-borehole" three-dimensional data acquisition system will be established to enable data interconnection and convergence within unified investigation platforms, ultimately supporting diverse engineering investigation scenarios powered by AI technology.
