    • In comparison with the conventional sensors, fiber optic sensor offers a number of attractive features and has become one of the popular research subjects in the field of geology and geotechnical engineering monitoring. This paper introduces the classification, basic measuring principle and current research achievements and development status of fiber optic sensing system in China and overseas. A comprehensive comparison of their performance and characteristic is made. Some relevant research topics in the application of fiber optic sensor-based monitoring technique to geology and geotechnical engineering are also put forward.
