  • This is a summary of the 2014 annual symposium of engineering geology in Taiyuan. The meeting gathered around 800 experts and scholars at the topic of the Major Engineering Geological Issues Induced by Resources Development. Through 15 invited lectures, 69 speeches in 3 sessions and the papers published in the proceedings, the meeting has reflected the state of art of engineering geology in China with the following features: (1)Touch the frontier of the discipline; (2)Provide technical supports to the regional economic development; (3)More internationalized and popularized with the active participation of enterprises; (4)Strongly promoted by the application of new technology; (5)Young professionals act as a vital force in the academic stage, and (6)Philosophical thinking makes the engineering geologists entered a new realm. The paper also pointed out the challenges to engineering geology in Chinese, firstly the gap between the poor fundamental research and the demand of the industry; secondly the urgency for the reconstruction of discipline spirit.
