    • In this thesis,the mechanism of piping is firstly studied by, lots of experiments and theoretic analysis.As a result, it is proved that piping and flowing are two different kinds of erosion effect. It is proposed how to discriminate between piping and flowing sand. Additionally, the formula of the critical seepage gradient is proposed.
